What are human rights? (“Have You Got That Right?” Ep. 1)

There are plenty of things we need in this
world. No, we are not talking about that 5 ply extra soft toilet paper or that activated almond milk at that new cafe you keep banging on about to your friends, no. We are talking
about things we need to live a dignified life. We are talking about human rights. These are the rights we are born with no matter who you are or where you come from. Every person has them. Human rights are recognised in international law, they are listed in a bunch of UN documents. And many countries have their own laws to protect human rights. So what are these rights? Many of us know there is a human right to food, shelter, security, expression and more. But. What about a right to healthy environment, a right to marriage equality, a right to asylum? Are these human rights? And most human rights have limits, but what are these limits? Well that’s what we are here to find out. What is a human right, and what isn’t? In this series we will explain human rights law quickly, clearly and in a way that won’t put you to sleep. So watch on and ask yourself…have you got that right?
