Thieves are now target Habitat for Humanity homes

ALL NEW AT TEN– WE’RE LEARNING ABOUT A DISHEARTENING TREND. CROOKS ARE TARGETING HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOMES. BRANDON SCOTT IS LOOKING INTO THIS FOR US. HE’S LIVE IN NORTH OMAHA. FOUR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOMES ARE CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD — AND ALL FOUR OF THEM WERE BROKEN INTO OVER THE WEEKEND. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY TELLS ME IT’S HAPPENING MORE AND MORE. BUILDERS ARE ANGRY — AND NEIGHBORS ARE FED UP. I THINK IT’S JUST TERRIBLE. THEY’RE TRYING TO MAKE THE NEIGHBORHOOD LOOK BETTER AND PEOPLE GOING AND STEALING THINGS OUT OF THE HOUSES, I THINK IT’S ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. DEBORAH TOLBERT LIVES JUST TWO DOORS DOWN FROM THIS HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOUSE ON NORTH 21ST STREET. SATURDAY NIGHT, SOMEONE PRIED OPEN THE LOCKED DOOR — DAMAGING THE DOOR KNOB — AND STEALING SEVERAL SPOOLS OF ELECTRICAL WIRING. YOU’RE TALKING MAYBE A POUND OF WIRE. KEITH ROBERTSON’S TEAM AT OMAHA ELECTRIC SERVICE DOES MOST OF HABITAT FOR HUMANITY’S ELECTRIC WORK. HE THINKS CROOKS ARE STEALING THE WIRE FOR THE COPPER INSIDE — EVEN THOUGH THE COPPER IN EACH ROLL IS ONLY WORTH ABOUT $50 BUCKS. IT STUMPS YOU BECAUSE YOU’RE WANTING TO DO SOME MUCH FOR PEOPLE THAT ARE IN NEED BUT THEN YOU DO THAT AND THEN THEY RIP YOU OFF BEHIND YOUR BACK, SO IT MAKES IT HARD SOMETIMES TO DO NICE THINGS IN THESE AREAS AND COMMUNITIES THAT WE’RE TRYING TO GET INTO WITH HABITAT. ACCORDING TO OMAHA POLICE, A TOTAL OF FOUR HOUSES WERE BURGLARIZED THIS WEEKEND. CONSTRUCTION SUPPLIES WERE TAKEN, TOO. THESE HOMES DO HAVE SECURITY SYSTEMS. BUT SINCE THE ELECTRICAL WORK ISN’T DONE YET, THE SECURITY SYSTEMS AREN’T ONLINE. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY PLANS TO HAVE THE SECURITY TURNED ON LATER THIS WEEK. BUT ALI MOHAMMAD ISN’T SURE THAT’S ENOUGH TO DETER THE THIEVES. HE LIVES IN A HABITAT HOUSE. IF YOU DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT, YOU’VE GOTTA HAVE LOW MORALS OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT THESE HOMES WERE SCHEDULED TO BE FINISHED BY THE END OF THE YEAR. THANKFULLY, EVEN WITH THE DAMAGED DOORS AND MISSING WIRES, HABITAT FOR HUMANITY THINKS THEY CAN STICK TO THEIR SCHEDULE. REPORTING LIVE – BRANDON SCOTT, WOWT SIX NEWS. INSURANCE FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY AND THE ELECTRICAL COMPANY MIGHT COVER SOME OF THE COST OF THE STOLEN MATERIALS AND THE DAMAGE. HOWEVER, THE CHARITY WILL STILL HAVE TO
