NEWS, REAL. NEW, NOW. MANY FAMILIES IN SPRINGFIELD ARE IN EED OF HOME REPAIRS BUT THE PROBLEM IS THEY CAN’T AFFORD IT. BUT THERE’S A PROBLEM THAT CAN HELP WITH IT. NANCY WILLIAMS IS NOT PROGRAM SERVICES DIRECTOR FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY AND A GRANT WAS RECENTLY AWARDED TO HELP FIX SOME OF THESE HOMES AS WELL. THANKS FOR BEING HERE WITH US. CREATING HEALTHY HOMES IS WHAT WE CALL A GRANT THAT WE RECEIVED FROM THE FEDERAL HOME LOAN BANK OF DES MOINES AN IS A MEMBER BANK IN SPRINGFIELD. WHAT IT DOES IS ALLOWS US TO FOR 40 HOUSEHOLDS ALLOW THEM TO HIRE CONTRACTORS TO DO FAIRLY MAJOR REPAIRS ON THE HOME. IT WILL BE WORK GEARED TOWARD HELPING SAFETY ISSUES AND MAJOR PRESERVATION OF THE HOME. SO IT MIGHT BE REPLACING THE ROOF IS LEAKING, IT MIGHT BE REPLACING A HVAC SYSTEM .IT MIGHT BE REPLACING A ELECTRICAL OR PLUMBING SYSTEM. SO FAIRLY MAJOR REPLACEMENTS OR UPGRADES. Jennifer: AND THESE ARE BIG-TICKET ITEMS THAT ARE COSTLY. RYAN PICKETT THAT’S THE THING ABOUT THIS YEAR’S GRANT. THIS IS THE 5TH YEAR IT HAS A GRANT. IT IS ACTUALLY A TWO-YEAR GRANT. BUT THE DOLLAR AMOUNT THAT THE FEDERAL HOME LOAN BANK WAS PUTS IT THESE GRANT RIGHTS EVERY TIME A TIMES $18,750. IN THE COASTAL HABITAT AND SOME GHOSTED FEES BUT OVER 18,000 AVERAGE PER HOUSEHOLD WILL BE SPENT ON THESE REPAIRS. Jennifer: AND IT WOULD LOVE $750,000 WHICH WAS AWARDED, SO, YEAH, THAT DOES SERVE A LOT OF PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY AS WELL. WHAT IS THE HEALTH RISK IF SOME OF THESE REPAIRS ARE DONE? YOU KNOW, I GET SO MANY CALLS FROM FOLKS WHOSE ROOF IS LEAKING, IT’S BEEN LEAKING FOR A WHILE. NOW THEY HAVE MOLD, YOU KNOW, OR SEWER LINES THAT AREN’T WORKING PROPERLY ANYMORE. THAT’S PRETTY HORRIBLE TO DEAL WITH. WINDOWS. YOU KNOW, WE CAN DO SEVERAL WITH THAT AMOUNT OF MONEY. WE CAN DO SEVERAL PARTS. LET’S SAY WE NEED TO REMOVE OLD KNOB AND TUBE WIRING SO A AC CAN COME IN AND EVALUATE. THINGS THAT AFFECT THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF THE HOUSEHOLD, ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF THE HOUSE. THE IMPACT WE ARE HAVING AND THIS MIGHT BE FOR A ELDERLY WIDOW, SAY, OR A COUPLE. MAYBE I JUST NEED A PORTRAIT BELT OR SOME WINDOW SILLS REPORTS, SOMETHING THAT WON’T MAKE THE LEVEL OF THESE GRANT. BUT WE HAVE OTHER PROGRAMS THAT WILL HELP WITH THAT. SO WITH ONE APPLICATION, THEY FILLED IT UP AND SEND IT BACK WITH THEM, WITH INCOME DOCUMENTATION. AND THAT THEY OWN A HOUSE IN GREENE COUNTY. AND THAT THEY IT CAN’T BE MOBILE HOME. AND BASICALLY IT CAN’T BE A CONTRACT FOR DEED OR RENT TO OWN SITUATION. WE LOOK TO SEE WHAT THEY NEED THEM, WHAT THEIR INCOME IS, WHAT PART OF TOWN THEY LIVE IN. ALL OF THAT GOES INTO OUR DECISION ON WHICH PROGRAM MIGHT SUIT THEM THE BEST, OR IF ANOTHER PROGRAM IN SPRINGFIELD MIGHT SUIT THEM BETTER. Jennifer: THERE IS ONE PROGRAM THAT YOU ARE ACTUALLY LOOKING FOR APPLICATIONS, AND THAT IS THE HOME BUYING PROGRAM? RIGHT. AND PEOPLE THINK OF THAT AS OUR TRADITIONAL HAVE THE PROGRAM, BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT WE’VE BEEN DOING IN SPRINGFIELD FOR 30 YEARS. AND WE DON’T HAVE ENOUGH FOR APPLICANTS FOR THE PROGRAM. AND WE REALLY NEED FOLKS THAT ARE FOR, SAY A FAMILY OF 3 BETWEEN 70,040 5000 ANNUAL GROSS INCOME. GIVE ME A CALL, AN APPLICATION PACKET.THEY CAN DO OR NOT, GET BACK TO ME. WE DO USE A COMMUNITY FOR THE PROCESS. WE DO USE A COMMITTEE FOR THE PROCESS. WE FOLLOW ALL THE RELATIONS THAT WE NEED TO BUT THIS IS THE WAY THAT WE CAN HELP FOLKS GET INTO A HOME THAT MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GET INTO HER HOME ANY OTHER WAY. WE SAW THE HOUSE.
