Honolulu Habitat for Humanity: Helping families get a home in Hawaii

COMMUNITIES, HOMES AND HOPE FOR THE PEOPLE OF HAWAI’I. WE’RE TALKING ABOUT THE HONOLULU HABITAT FOR HUMANITY. Trini: VOLUNTEERS ARE A CRITICAL PART OF THAT ORGANIZATION. WE’RE LEARNING ABOUT IT TODAY. IT’S AWESOME. THERE’S ABOUT 20 OF US HERE. IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY. STUFF THAT I DON’T KNOW HOW TO DO, A LOT OF US DON’T KNOW HOW TO DO, WE’RE LEARNING SOMETHING NEW. WE’RE BUILDING SOMETHING THAT’S GOING TO BE MEANINGFUL TO THE FAMILY THAT’S GOING TO LIVE HERE. WE GET TO TO SAY WE WERE PART OF THAT. WE’RE IN WAIMANALO TODAY. THERE’S A LOT OF VOLUNTEERS HERE HELPING TO BUILD A HOME. IT’S ALL PART OF HONOLULU HABITAT FOR HUMANITY. WE’RE LEARN MORE WHERE THE ORGANIZE DOGS AND ABOUT THEIR — ORGANIZATION TODAY AND THEIR PROGRAM. I’M HERE WITH IVAN OROZOCO, THE VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR. FOR PEOPLE WHO MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH THE ORGANIZATION, WHY ARE YOU BUILDING HOMES? ONE OF OUR CORE MISSIONS IS TO PROVIDE AFFORDABLE HOMES FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES ON THE ISLAND. HERE ON HAWAI’I, IT’S A LITTLE BIT MORE EXPENSIVE TO LIVE AND TO BE ABLE TO PROVIDE AFFORDABLE HOUSING. SO OUR PROGRAMS GIVE A PATH TO HOME OWNERSHIP. FOR THOSE FAMILIES THAT MIGHT NOT QUALIFY FOR A NORMAL MORTGAGE, WE GIVE A 0% INTEREST MORTGAGE WITH ONLY A THOUSAND DOLLARS DOWN, WHICH MAKES THE PATH TO HOME OWNERSHIP REASONABLE AND EASY TO AFFORD. Trini: THAT’S AMAZING. SO I’M SURE VOLUNTEERS IS A BIG PART OF THE ORGANIZATION. WHO COMES TO VOLUNTEER FOR HONOLULU HABITAT? WE’VE GOT A GREAT MIXTURE OF VOLUNTEERS. IN THE BACKGROUND WE HAVE MEMBERS OF DELTA AND HAWAIIAN AIRLINES THIS WEEK. THEY’VE BEEN BUILDING THE HOME. BUT WE HAVE A GREAT MILITARY PRESENCE THAT COME OUT AND HELP OUT. INDIVIDUAL CHURCHES AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS. IT’S A GREAT MIXTURE OF VOLUNTEERS COMING OUT TO BUILD THIS HOME FOR THE FAMILY. Trini: IS EXPERIENCE NECESSARY? WHAT CAN VOLUNTEERS EXPECT ONCE THEY COME OUT HERE? THAT’S A GREAT QUESTION. NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED HERE AT THE BUILD SITE. WE SAY A WILLINGNESS TO LEARN. HOUR CONSTRUCTION TWEAM WILL TEACH VOLUNTEERS HOW TO SAFELY AND ACCURATELY COMPLETE EACH TASK, BUT IT’S NOT REQUIRED THAT YOU HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE INVOLVED. IT’S A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THOSE PEOPLE TO LEARN A NEW SKILL AND BRANCH OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE. IT’S A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR COMPANIES TO COME TOGETHER AND HAVE SOME TEAM BONDING AND DO SOMETHING GREAT FOR THEIR COMMUNITY. HOW MANY VOLUNTEERS DO YOU HAVE CURRENTLY? OUR ACTIVE DATABASE IS ALMOST FIVE THOUSAND VOLUNTEERS WE HAVE. TYPICALLY WE SAY THAT ONE HOME WILL REQUIRE ABOUT FIVE HUNDRED VOLUNTEERS TO COME OUT AND COMPLETE FROM START TO FINISH. WHAT TAB THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT WANT TO VOLUNTEER BUT THEY CAN’T COME DURING THE WEEK AND HELP BUILD THE HOUSE. ARE THERE OTHER WAYS TO GET INVOLVED? WE HAVE OUR RESTORE IN KALIHI. THAT’S A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR VOLUNTEERS TO COME OUT. IT’S NONCONSTRUCTION RELATED BUT IT’S A GREAT WAY TO HELP. THAT’S AVAILABLE TUESDAY TO SATURDAY. AND WE HAVE OFFICE ADMINISTRATIVE OPPORTUNITY. VOLUNTEERS CAN HELP WITH DATA ENTRY. WE HAVE A COUPLE VOLUNTEERS THAT CAN FIT THE NEED AND SKILL LEVEL. Trini: PERFECT. IF PEOPLE WANT TO GET MORE INFORMATION? WWW.HONOLULU HABITAT.ORG IS A GREAT SOURCE AS WELL AS E-MAILING US AT INFOR AT HONOLULU.ORG. Trini: ISN’T THAT GREAT? IT SEE ALL OF THESE COMPANIES, BUSINESSES COMING TOGETHER TO HELP FAMILIES WHO NEED THE HELP. TAIZO: SO TACKLE THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND HOMELESS ISSUE IN HAWAI’I, IT TAKES SO MANY PEOPLE WORKING TOGETHER. AND THIS IS A POSITIVE IMAGE OF THAT. EVERYBODY WORKING TOGETHER TO BUILD HOMES. THAT’S WHAT WE NEED. Trini: THE HOURS ARE FROM 8:30 TO 4:30. 6 YEARS16 YEARS AND OLDER. KHON IS GOING TO GO OUT THERE AND BUILD HOMES ONE WEEKEND IF DECEMBER. TAIZO: NO KIDDING. THAT’S A GREAT EXPERIENCE. AND I LOVE HOW YOU DID THE STORY BEFORE ON THEIR STORY. Trini: GREAT STORE. IF YOU MISSED THAT STORE, PLEASE
