Habitat for Humanity Buffalo gives new life to former zombie home in South Buffalo


NIAGARA FALLS. THE MEETING IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC -AND STARTS AT SIX O’CLOCK HABITAT FOR HUMANITY IS GIVING NEW LIFE TO A FORMER ZOMBIE HOME IN SOUTH BUFFALO. NEWS 4’S ANGELA CHRISTOFOROS TAKES US INSIDE, ANGELA. CALLAN A HOME ON GERMANIA STREET WAS ABANDONED FOR NEARLY A DECADE BEFORE IT WAS DONATED TO HABITAT FOR HUMANITY LAST JUNE. RIGHT NOW SEVERAL VOLUNTEERS ARE HARD AT WORK COMPLETELY RENOVATING THE INSIDE OF THE HOME. THEY’RE WORKING ON PUTTING DOWN HARDWOOD FLOORING AND PAINTING. ONCE THE WEATHER GETS A BIT WARMER THEY PLAN TO GET STARTED ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE HOME. A HOME BUYER IS WORKING ON COMPLETING 500 HOURS OF SWEAT EQUITY, AND READY TO MOVE INTO THE HOME ONCE IT’S FINISHED. SINCE THE PROJECT BEGAN IN LATE JUNE, HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUFFALO HAS DEDICATED AT LEAST A DOZEN HOMES. ((THIS HOME WAS ORIGINALLY A DOUBLE, SOMEONE HAD COME IN MADE IT A MULTI-FAMILY HOME AND THEN IT SAT VACANT FOR 7 YEARS. WE TOOK IT OVER AND ESSENTIALLY HAD TO GUT THE ENTIRE THING, NOT A SINGLE INTERIOR WALL IS THE SAME. WE HAD TO REPLACE EVERY INTERIOR WALL, MAKE MAJOR FOUNDATION CHANGES, MAJOR STRUCTURAL FORMS AND MAKE SURE THAT THIS WAS A SAFE HOME AND AN AFFORDABLE HOME AND A DECENT HOME FOR OUR SOON TO BE HOME BUYERS. SO ANY ZOMBIE HOME THAT YOU HAVE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, KNOCK ON THE BANKS DOOR AND TELL THEM TO DONATE TO HABITAT.)) VOLUNTEERS ARE ABOUT 2 AND A HALF MONTHS OUT FROM COMPLETING THE HOME – THEY PLAN TO HAVE THE HOME DEDICATED TO A FAMILY BY
