Greater Springfield Habitat for Humanity to build house on Sumner Ave. in a week

ALTERNATE POSITIONS. ANC: HABITAT FOR HUMANITY IS ON A MISSION TO BUILD A HOUSE IN ONE WEEK IN SPRINGFIELD. IT’S A “HOME BUILDERS BLITZ” ON SUMNER AVE. THIS IS A “LEGACY BUILD” MEANT TO CELEBRATE THE FIRST 30 YEARS OF THE GREATER SPRINGFIELD HABITAT FOR HUMANITY. THE HOUSE IS BEING BUILT BY VOLUNTEERS AND PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS WHO VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME. THE FUTURE HOMEOWNERS ARE ALSO INVOLVED IN THE CONSTRUCTION. THEY QUALIFY BY BEING ABLE TO AFFORD 29 PERCENT OF THEIR INCOME FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING. “WE GO THROUGH THE WHOLE UNDERWRITING PROCESS WITH THEM. MAKE SURE THEY CAN AFFORD A MORTGAGE. CAUSE ONCE THEY BUILD A HOUSE WITH US, THEY PURCHASE IT FROM US, AND THEY PAY US BACK AND THEY PAY IT FORWARD.” ANCHOR: SCHIMMEL SAID IT COSTS ABOUT 150- THOUSAND DOLLARS TO BUILD A HABITAT HOUSE.
